Ken Mengel - Education

I graduated from California State University Northridge with a BM in music performance. I also have a teaching credential in secondary education in music from Cal State Northridge as well. I am a current member of SCSBOA and currently hold clinics and adjudicated festivals for them, as well as for the Los Angeles Unified School District. Being a professional freelance Trombonist has helped me greatly as an educator as well as studying with such great teachers as Bill Booth, Roy Main, and Alex Iles.

I taught at Granada Hills High School from 1995-2006 where I was the Assistant Music Director for 10 years. There I taught groups such as Marching Band, Concert Band, Wind Symphony, and Jazz “A” Band. I was the director of the Chamber Music program there as well as the director of their string program that included String and Symphonic Orchestra. I also helped create and run The Granada Hills High School Music Academy that helped students further their music education by allowing them to major in music.

One of the things I enjoy most about music is the ability to take what I’ve learned and pass it along to someone else. I derive great joy in being able to help students overcome obstacles and provide them with the tools to help them succeed. Private lessons and clinics can be great tools to not only help ones playing, but can also be used to help things such as building confidence, improving self esteem, and simply helping students to learn to love, understand, and appreciate music.
